How to Protect Your Pets from Cannabis Poisoning

Unfortunately, one bit of news that’s come with cannabis legalization isn’t good. There’s an uptick in cannabis poisoning in pets, especially with the increasing popularity of infused edibles. Just like when you have small children, you can’t leave anything where a curious dog or even cat might investigate.

Cannabis affects pets differently than humans. They’re much more sensitive than we are. Dogs and cats don’t find being high fun. It’s extremely distressing and they have no way to communicate their discomfort. In extreme cases cannabis poisoning in pets can cause coma or even death. The easiest thing you can do is prevent access in the first place.

store your cannabis

Securely Store Your Cannabis and Cannabis Products

Keeping your stash and products containing cannabis in a secure container out of reach of pets is the best thing you can do to keep them safe. A lot of people take this simple step but watch out for other potential hazards to pets like an ashtray of roaches or a possible bong water spill. Keeping edibles out of reach of pets is a must. What dog can resist a cookie or brownie? Keep cannabis infused products in a chew-proof container out of reach of dogs!

Monitor Your Pets

Keeping a watchful eye on your pets will help you notice signs of cannabis poisoning. Drooling, lack of balance, and uncoordinated movements are signs something serious is wrong. Other signs might include dilated pupils, severe anxiety and hyperactivity.

Seek Advice Immediately

If you suspect your pet has consumed cannabis, it’s important to contact a vet as soon as possible, especially if the amount is unknown. If you believe your pets has ingested a very small amount of cannabis, you can call the ASPCA poison control center at (888) 426-4435 for advice. A consultation fee may apply.

There are many types of stash containers, even ones with locks for nosy roommates and homes with kids. Airtight glass jars are our preferred place to keep a stash. How do you keep your cannabis products safe from curious pets? Let us know in the comments below!
