HIGH ART 2020 SPOTLIGHT: M HADY SANTOSO
“TAJUL MULUK ALMANAC”
“When people hear the word ‘marijuana’, they only focus on the negative side rather than the positive side of the magic herb. God’s creation would never be useless, this applies for marijuana. It has various benefits for humans. Its fiber can be used for textile and paper industries, its seeds are a protein-rich herbal oil, its leaves can heal; cancer, alzheimers, parkinsons, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, epilepsy, respiratory disorders, anxiety disorders, and nausea… Although the Indonesia the government has banned marijuana for commercial use, people in Padang, Medan, and Aceh have added marijuana in their cooking for centuries, as an example: Rendang Padang. The delicious taste of Rendang got people ‘on the fly’, it gives them the sensation of smoking weed.”
M Hady Santoso, born June 15th, 1971 in Semarang, started his art career in 1991, at a Japanese animation company in Jakarta. He then moved to a local animation production house. From 1996 until now he worked in Kompas Gramedia as an illustrator and graphic designer. His artistic ability comes from non-formal education. Apart from being an employee, he also paints on canvas with various kinds of media, such as oil paint, acrylic paint, and also coffee. He often attends painting exhibitions, both in Indonesia and abroad. His latest work has exhibited in an exhibition held by The Starfish Art Association, ‘Belt and Road Art Expo’ at Hong Kong Central Library Exhibiton Hall.

High Art was created by Dona Frank and The Natural Cannabis Company in 2014 as a crowdsourcing solution to packaging design. From its humble beginnings, High Art has developed into an internationally-known art competition with thousands of entries annually from 100+ countries all over the world.
Each year professional and amateur artists create themed works through a variety of mediums to compete for $50,000 in prize money and to see their work featured on packaging, social media, at the High Art gallery in Santa Rosa, CA and displayed at prestigious art events, in the United States and abroad.
