High Art 2020 Inspo: The Fantasy Art of Boris Vallejo
High Art 2020 Inspo: The Fantasy Art of Boris Vallejo
High Art 2020 begins on February 20th, with a new theme of MAGIC. Magic is most commonly depicted in fantasy art. There are no rules saying entered work needs to be fantasy; it’s just one direction our artists can go. To help inspire you, we look to one of the most popular fantasy painters of them all, Boris Vallejo.
Boris Vallejo is a Peruvian artist who immigrated to the USA in 1964 and is best known for his fantasy and erotica paintings. His art has appeared on innumerable fantasy and sci-fi book covers, in a best-selling calendar line, album covers and motion picture advertising.
Fun fact: Boris Vallejo isn’t strictly fantasy. He’s also designed movie posters for famous films like National Lampoon’s Vacation and European Vacation.
Vallejo’s art most often features a sword-and-sorcery style depiction of fantasy characters and beasts with well-muscled men and amply endowed, barely clad, women. The women in Vallejo’s work are often powerful. They’re barbarians, sorceresses, succubae and goddesses. Magic abounds in Vallejo’s work, from its mythical creatures to its enchanting characters. Men and women battle dragons, demons, harpies, and the undead.
His preferred medium is oil on board with preliminary sketches done in pencil or pen and ink.
