Cannabis 101: The Benefits of CBD

If you’re new to the world of medical marijuana, you’ve probably heard the term “CBD” in the news a lot recently. CBD (cannabidiol) is a compound found in cannabis. It’s different from THC in that it has no psychoactive properties and doesn’t cause the user to feel “high.” Cannabis naturally contains both THC and CBD, as well as more than a hundred other compounds known as cannabinoids. Due to heavy restrictions on cannabis research, the medical benefits of many of these compounds are just now being discovered.

CBD has many documented health benefits, both mental and physical. Some of these benefits include:

Pain relief – CBD has anti-inflammatory properties and works with our body’s endocannabinoid system to alter pain receptors in the brain. CBD research has shown significant impact on chronic pain, including neuropathic pain, which is common on its own as well in conditions like Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Anxiety – CBD has many mental health applications, including showing promise for schizophrenia, but anxiety tops the list. In a recent study on public speaking anxiety, researchers found that pretreatment with CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort in their speech performance. The placebo group presented with higher anxiety. CBD can also be effective for treating social anxiety, panic disorders and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Cancer – CBD research shows properties that inhibit cancerous cell growth and migration. One study showed CBD may strongly impact breast cancer cells. Other cancer studies on CBD also show positive effects on colon and lung cancer as well as leukemia.

Nausea – Both CBD and THC have been shown to reduce nausea and vomiting. Cannabis has long been used to help cancer patients recover their appetites and reduce nausea after chemotherapy. Poor appetite and nausea are symptoms of many conditions that can be relieved with CBD oil or cannabis. Seniors are especially at-risk for poor nutrition due to appetite loss. Some cannabis strains also have added digestive benefits.  While CBD and THC can both combat nausea, vomiting and appetite loss, it’s thought that they work best together (along with the other 100+ cannabinoids) through the
“entourage effect.”

Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders – CBD has been shown to significantly reduce or eliminate seizures in some epileptic children, many of whom had tried an average of 12 prior medications. Additionally, children using CBD for treating seizures reported better sleep and improved mood.

It’s important to note cannabinoids affect each person differently and is dependent not just on the quality and potency of the product, but on personal body and brain chemistry. Additionally, CBD and THC work best when they’re together – not separated out. CBD can be used in many ways, from smoking/vaping flowers or oil to fast-acting tinctures placed under the tongue. Recreational cannabis strains tend to be low in CBD but CBD-rich and 1:1 strains are available at most dispensaries.
