Cannabis 101: THC vs. CBD

A crash course on the two most common chemical compounds known to play a significant role within cannabis: THC vs. CBD.

Did you know that there are more than 400 active chemical compounds present in the cannabis plant?

Each chemical plays a different role in the process of healing and providing relief for multiple ailments. We still have a lot to learn, but we have gained a good amount of information on some of the most prominent chemical.

Here’s a bit about two of them:

THC – Tetrahydrocannabinol

THC probably sounds familiar to you. That’s because it is the most common chemical found in cannabis. THC is responsible for many things, most notably that psychoactive “stoned” or “high” feeling you get when you smoke most strains. THC works by helping your brain produce more dopamine (most easily described as the chemical in your brain that makes you happy), causing euphoric feelings throughout your body. For this reason, THC rich strains are great for treating depression and pain.

CBD – Cannabidiol

CBD is the second most highly concentrated chemical compound present in cannabis. CBD has recently gained attention in the scientific world for its ability to reduce inflammation, relax muscles and more, all without the psychoactive effects of THC. Recreational users may be disappointed in the lack of the common “stone”, but for many, CBD is a side-effect free way to experience the benefits of cannabis. CBD is also thought to help counteract the effects of THC, helping to reduce side-effects such as paranoia. Strains rich in CBD are most commonly used to treat neurological disorders, epilepsy and cancer.

There’s always new knowledge pouring in from the scientific field about cannabis, and with legalization around the bend, we hope to see much more!
