HIGH ART 2020 SPOTLIGHT: CANDICE PHILIP

HIGH ART 2020 SPOTLIGHT: CANDICE PHILIP

“Blue Pearl” (Oil on canvas)

Blue Pearl is a self portrait that attempts to express an experience that artist South African painter, Candice Philip, had while meditating high. During the meditation she was suddenly filled with a feeling of pure peace, while a brilliant light with a spiraling blue pattern surrounding it appeared in the darkness of her closed eyes. This is the closest thing she has ever experienced to magic. She has since read that this light that people sometimes see while meditating is known as the blue pearl. It is thought to be the finest covering of the soul, and is seen when the third eye opens. This piece is an expression of the magic of human consciousness.

Candice studied fine art at Rhodes University for 4 years. She has since been making paintings that focus on exploring consciousness and the shift in perception that happens when practicing meditation, and making use of plants like cannabis. She likes to smoke cannabis while she paints, as it loosens her up and allows her to express whatever she is thinking and feeling more easily. She aims to create art that is filled with bright colours and positive energy. She wants her paintings to have the ability to change the energy in a room and make people feel good.

She entered “Blue Pearl” during High Art 2020!
