Munchies: Summer S’mores 6 Ways
Munchies: Summer S’mores 6 Ways
You know summer is on its way when the grocery stores move all the s’mores ingredients up to the front. S’mores are the hallmark treat of cookouts and camping, the quintessential outdoor summer dessert. Although summer is still a few weeks off and you may not have a camping trip planned yet, there’s no reason to deny yourself the chocolate-marshmallowy deliciousness normally reserved for July, August and September. You can have them any time, nearly anywhere!
Just to recap, your s’mores basics:
Step 1. Break graham cracker in half and place on plate.
Step 2. Top one half with a square of chocolate, traditionally Hersey’s milk chocolate bar.
Step 3. Place toasted marshmallow on top of chocolate.
Step 4. Cover with remaining graham cracker.
Clearly, when it comes to s’mores, the trick is in the marshmallow. Fortunately, you don’t need a campfire to make them. Here are six ways to toast your marshmallow:
Traditional Campfire Cooking
The secret to a great s’more is to achieve the perfectly toasted, light brown marshmallow and not a blackened lump of char. Using a skewer or long stick with a whittled end, keep your marshmallow near the coals and regularly rotate. Avoid catching fire.
Microwave
Place one half of the graham cracker topped with chocolate on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave for 15 seconds then top with the remaining graham cracker.
Gas Stove
As with the campfire method, you can toast a marshmallow with a skewer or fork over the open flame.
Outdoor Grill
Another skewer-over-an-open-flame method, use your hot coals to toast up marshmallows.
Toaster Oven
Personally, I like to place my marshmallows on tinfoil before broiling them for a couple of minutes until they’re brown on top, but you can broil your graham cracker and chocolate topped with marshmallow if you prefer.
Oven
Want to toast marshmallows for a crowd? Use the oven. Place marshmallows on a foil-lined baking tray, an inch or two apart. Broil in the oven, checking frequently until the tops are lightly browned. Remove from the oven, turn the marshmallow and broil the other side.
As you can see, no campfire is no reason to skip the s’mores! Looking for a new twist on this classic dessert?
