Terpene Profile: Limonene

By Zelda Flowers

Limonene is one of the more common terpenes found in cannabis. It’s a fragrant oil created along with cannabinoids in the marijuana resin glands. The hallmark of limonene is a pungent citrus aroma. This is what gives strains like Super Lemon Haze and Tangie their signature citrus scents. Limonene isn’t exclusive to cannabis; it’s most commonly found in citrus rind and frequently used in the production of household cleaners and perfumes. In addition to a strong sweet-sour citrus smell, its low toxicity makes it a popular choice.

Terpenes don’t just effect the flavor of cannabis, they work in conjunction with cannabinoids and other compounds to provide a host of benefits. Limonene has a broad range of applications.

Mood and Mental Health

Citrus aromas have been used in aromatherapy to provide a mood boost and mental energy for ages. Limonene has the same effect. Strains high in limonene with produce a high with mental euphoria and creative energy. This can be especially useful for people suffering from depression, anxiety and lack of motivation. Studies suggest it causes a rise of serotonin and dopamine neurotransmitters in the brain.

Gastrological Problems

Limonene can provide relief from a host of gastro-related problems from heartburn to GERD. It’s been shown to reduce nausea and help reflux.

Weight Loss

While some strains provide the “munchies” – increased appetite and enhanced sensitivity to the aroma and taste of food, others help promote weight loss by reducing the appetite. Strains high in limonene will reduce the appetite and help provide mental motivation for increased movement. Some studies have shown limonene can help lower cholesterol as well.

Anti-Cancer

Many promising studies have shown limonene to inhibit cancer cell growth and helps fight the spread of various cancers including glioblastoma, prostate, pancreatic, breast and skin melanoma.

Summary: Limonene is a terpene typically found in sativa strains (although not exclusively) that promotes mental health, energy, motivation and can help alleviate symptoms of depression. Limonene has also shown to produce myriad health benefits including treating gastrological conditions, promoting weight loss, lowering cholesterol and inhibiting cancer cell growth.
