Product Review: Natural Cannabis Company Cannabis Granola
By Zelda Flowers
I’m continuing my exploration of edibles with Natural Cannabis Company’s Cannabis Granola ($15 – 1.5 oz). The first thing I noticed was that it is organic, vegan and gluten-free. Living in Northern California weed country, special diets are hardly special. I have a number of friends who are vegetarian or vegan and/or follow gluten-free diets. It’s nice to know there’s something I can buy for them if I want to be a good hostess.
The 1.5 ounce package contains 250 mg of THC in the infused coconut oil used to make the granola. It also has whole grain oats, coconut, sunflower seeds, cranberries, maple syrup and cinnamon. That’s it. No additives or chemicals. One thing that I like to mention when I write about Natural Cannabis products is their commitment to quality. They use a C02 extraction process that is free from winterization, Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG). PG is a petroleum by-product and while the FDA says it’s safe to take orally, there hasn’t been much research on the effects of inhalation. I don’t know about you but FDA be damned, I’m not intentionally inhaling chemicals. This factor really matters when it comes to extracts. Still, it’s nice to know that the edible products are free of these things as well.
The granola smells delicious, like cinnamon. I ate about a quarter of an ounce, so around 50 mg of THC, dry. It was quite tasty, although in the future I’d probably mix it with a little vanilla yogurt. A little more than an hour later, I had a really nice, healthy buzz. It was a solid all-over feeling where I felt happy and light but not lazy or impaired. It lasted a little more than an hour.
My initial thought about cannabis granola was, “what a perfect product for hiking or camping!” It has a little more substance than many other edibles that rely on triggering your sweet tooth. It’s portable, has a resealable bag and, depending on your consumption level, could last over a weekend or be shared with likeminded friends. One of my pet peeves in edibles is having a multi- or mega-dose product that you have to chop or divide and then rewrap. I don’t want half a Cheeba Chew rolling around in my giant purse, picking up lint and dog hair. That’s not a problem here. You can pour yourself a little handful and zip it back up. If you need a little more, eat a little more. Perfect!
Summary: I really liked this product for several reasons. I have a hard time finding snacks for my gluten-free and vegan friends and it’s sweet enough on its own that I could set a small bowl out for movie night. I love that you can really have control over your dose. You can start small and build up in whatever increments you’re comfortable with. I like that it’s healthy. It you’re a sporty cannabis enthusiast, this is a great product for you.
