HIGH ART 2020 SPOTLIGHT: ARYA WIRAWAN

“Balinese Folklore”

“For this piece I picked one of Indonesian traditional folklores, an ancient folklore named “Calon Arang” from an island called Bali. Calon Arang folklore tells of a woman’s emancipation during an ancient time in which women were viewed as tools of mens’ benefit. The calon arang character fought for her right to be equal to men by shapeshifting herself into a demon-like being to crush her valley as a symbol of her absolute power.”

Arya Wirawan was born in Belawan (North Sumatra, Indonesia) November 8, 1986. Arya is a visual artist who combines installation works with the ability to paint, draw, and woodwork in each of his works. Most of his artwork themes are often speaks between the subject matter of traditional ancestral heritage and its relevance into a modern people problem solving, which is intends to maintain the distinctive characteristics of a native group as a precious pattern, but it can also have the capability to harmonize and even support progress on modern human life.
