8 Tips for Counteracting Cannabis Over-Indulgence

First, let’s get one thing straight. No one has ever directly died from a cannabis overdose. However, especially with edibles where dosing can be complicated, experiencing a high that’s too intense can be a distressing and uncomfortable experience. If you accidently ingest too much cannabis and find yourself too high for comfort, here’s a few tips to help you come back down.

  1. Don’t panic. This is a temporary situation that will pass. Panic will only produce additional physically uncomfortable symptoms such as racing heart, nausea, overheating and dizziness. Instead, locate a safe and comfortable place such as your bed or sofa to wait it out.
  2. Stay hydrated. Drink water, a lot of water. This will help keep your body hydrated and make you feel better. If you don’t like water, drink juice or some other non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic beverage. Even the act of sipping will help distract you from your situation.
  3. Try citrus or pepper: An old home remedy for paranoia, anxiety and its associated physical symptoms is to take a shot of lemon juice or suck on a lemon. Many also swear by black peppercorns. Chew one or two or enjoy a peppery snack.
  4. Sleep it off. If you feel sleepy, taking a nap is the best way to ride out a too high cannabis experience. If you find that your mind won’t turn off, simply relaxing in a comfortable, peaceful space can help. Put on some relaxing music. Create a calm environment for yourself.
  5. Distract yourself. Watch a favorite TV show or movie if you find you’re unable to sleep and have an overactive mind. Play a match-3 game on your phone or tablet or break out the adult coloring books. Concentrating on something enjoyable will help the time pass quickly.
  6. Take a walk. If you’re feeling up to it, take a walk outside, preferable to a park or other space where you’re not worrying about traffic and pedestrians. Better yet, call a friend and walk together.
  7. Take a hot shower. The hot water will help your body feel better while the act of soaping and cleansing will distract your mind. Add some citrus or peppermint aromatherapy to help clear the mind. You’ll feel refreshed afterwards.
  8. Eat something. Grab a snack or make yourself a delicious meal. The food will make you feel better and preparing something you enjoy is another great distraction technique.
